The Money is in the Follow-up – Autoresponders Review

Do you remember reading Dr. Seuss’s book, “Green Eggs and Ham” as child or to your own children?

“I am Sam. Sam I am. Do you like green eggs and ham? Would you like them here or there? Would you like them in a box, would you like them with a fox?”

“Green Eggs and Ham” by Dr. Seuss is a classic tale of the struggling salesman. Super salesman Sam-I-Am is persistent in his pursuit to persuade his friend to try the not-so-appetizing meal of green eggs and ham.   Sam-I-Am overcomes no less than 73 objections before he makes his “sale”.

Now I am not suggesting that you pester your customers to buy a product they don’t want or need like Sam-I-Am.  But what I am suggesting is that to many people hear the word “No” once and give up.

In the “Success Principals” by Jack Canfield he writes:

A Telling Statistic

Herbert True, a marketing specialist at Notre Dame University, found that

  • 44% of all salespeople quit trying after the first call
  • 24% quit after the second call
  • 14% quit after the third call
  • 12% quit trying to sell their prospect after the fourth call

This means that 94% of all salespeople quit after the fourth call. But 60% of all sales are made after the fourth call. This revealing statistic shows that 94% of all salespeople don’t give themselves a chance at 60% of the prospective buyers.

So what is your current follow-up program to keep in touch with your prospects and customers on a regular and consistent basis so you stay on the top of their minds?   One must have tool is the autoresponder. Through email autoresponders, for as little as $20/month and a couple hours to set-up, you can build a power-house marketing campaign.

Because as business owners we are not selling this product or that product, but ourselves. So keeping in contact with your network is very important.   How often are you following up?

If you’re already using an autoresponder GREAT! But if your not I’ve included some popular autoresponders I’ve seen other marketers use.  Many of them have a 30 day free trial and each have their own unique features.  I would recommend trying all of them and then canceling the ones you don’t like.  And keep the one that best fits your business needs.

  • 1shoppingcart- is primarily for e-commerce, but it offers an autoresponder.  If you’re strictly using it for an autoresponder, I don’t think it is as powerful as some of the others out there
  • ConstantContact - is an autoresponder and online surveyor.  It’s good for basic task, but really limits you on customization and tracking
  • AWeber - is a powerful autoresponder that allows you to customize data fields, tracks click throughs, spam test, and more
  • GetResponse - has a very similar look and feel as AWeber, but not as widely used as
  • Infusionsoft - is the mother of all autoresponders.  It is actually more of an online CRM software than anything.  It cost $5,000+ to setup and $300+/month, so it’s for the advance user
  • FREE Autoresponders
    • FreeAutobot
    • SendFree
    • Freebielist
    • Autoresponder Software – If you don’t want to have to deal with all the advertisements, leave a post and I will send you a free autoresponder software that you install on your website host

The above are just a sample of autoresponders out there.  I would recommend anytime you receive an email from someone to look at the bottom of the email to see what autoresponder they use.  After you start to see the same one over and over again, then you will know which ones are the industry leaders.

The important take away is just to get started.  You don’t need a 100 messages in your autoresponder.  Start out with 1-3, then add as you grow.  Remember, people do business with people they know, like, and trust.  And regular email campaigns combined with regular phone contact and in-person contact is a great way to do just that.

Success Formula = (Knowledge x Action x Attitude)^Consistency
